This Isn't Just a Care Label. It's How the Fabric Was Made to Be Treated.
Comfort Colors 1717 is garment-dyed — meaning the fabric is dyed after the shirt is constructed, not before. This is what gives it that soft, slightly faded, broken-in look right out of the package, and it’s also why washing it cold matters. Hot water accelerates color fading and can cause the garment-dyed finish to wear unevenly over time.
Cold water washing protects the color and the hand-feel of the fabric — and Comfort Colors is designed to get even softer with every wash when cared for this way. The shirt you wear in year two should feel better than the one you unboxed.
Protect the Design as Well as the Shirt.
Every Summit & Hound design is printed using premium methods built to last — but how you wash and dry your shirt directly affects how long that print stays sharp.
Turn your shirt inside out before washing. This protects the printed design from friction against other garments, zippers, and the inside of the washing machine drum.
Avoid high heat in the dryer. Heat is the number one cause of print cracking, peeling, and fading over time. Tumble dry on low, or better — hang dry. Air drying is the single best thing you can do to extend the life of both the fabric and the print.
If you need to iron your shirt, turn it inside out first, or iron around the printed area on low heat. Never iron directly on top of a printed design.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Will my Summit & Hound shirt shrink in the wash?
Comfort Colors 1717 is pre-shrunk during the garment-dyeing process, so shrinkage is minimal when washed cold and dried on low heat or hung to dry. Avoid high heat drying to preserve the original fit.
Why does Comfort Colors fabric get softer over time?
The garment-dyeing process used on Comfort Colors 1717 creates a fabric that continues to soften with each wash and wear cycle. Cold washing and low-heat or air drying preserve this quality and prevent the fabric from breaking down prematurely.
Can I put my shirt in the dryer?
Yes, on low heat. For the best results and longest-lasting print, we recommend hang drying instead. High heat is the most common cause of print damage over time.
How do I keep the design from cracking or fading?
Turn the shirt inside out before washing and drying, avoid high heat, and never iron directly on the printed design. These three steps are the biggest factors in how long a printed design stays looking new.
Is Comfort Colors 1717 pre-shrunk?
Yes. The garment-dyeing process pre-shrinks the fabric, which is why Comfort Colors tees maintain their fit and shape reliably when cared for properly.
Do I need to dry clean my Summit & Hound apparel?
No. None of our apparel requires or recommends dry cleaning. Standard cold-water machine washing and low-heat drying is all that’s needed.
Take Care of It. It'll Take Care of You.
A well-cared-for Comfort Colors tee doesn’t just last — it gets better. The same shirt you order today should be the one you reach for years from now, softer, broken-in, and exactly the way you like it.
